History

Grand River Printing, Inc. was founded in Southfield, Michigan in August 1978. With an initial investment in a three-unit web press and some mechanical prepress equipment, the company opened a single 4,000 square foot bay in an industrial building on Telegraph Road between 8 and 9 Mile Roads. It was there that he set out to realize his dream to build a successful printing firm.

After just a few years, the company established one of its hallmark characteristics — prudent adoption of new technologies — by pioneering full color print in coldset web offset lithography. By the mid 1980s, Grand River gained national, and even international, recognition for the quality of its process color reproduction. In 1985 and 1986, the company won back-to-back first prize awards in a North American high quality color printing competition sponsored by Kodak.

Grand River entered the 1990s in a position of strength and it was at this critical juncture that the company elected to expand into the commercial print market by acquiring its first heatset web offset press in 1994. Knowing that Detroit lacked a provider of high-quality commercial heatset printing services, the company altered its name to Grand River Printing & Imaging and set out on a path of rapid growth and development.

Throughout its second decade, Grand River built a reputation for emphasizing education and standards within the graphic arts and design communities. As desktop technologies made it possible for clients to become ever-more involved in preproduction, a significant need for skills development and common practices emerged. Grand River stepped in with a program of seminars and customer training solutions that were based on industry wide standards initiatives and sought to keep pace with the advancing digital revolution.

By the beginning of the new millennium, Grand River was developing innovative high-volume print media solutions that enabled publishers and advertisers to make an impact on consumer and business customers. It was during this time that the company also began to expand significantly beyond the southeastern Michigan market and to establish more of a national footprint in the print business.

In 2004, with the company now ten times the size it was only one decade earlier, Grand River took the important step of relocating to a brand new 86,000 square foot plant in Belleville, Michigan. In this state-of-the-art print manufacturing and services facility, the company is well positioned for the next phase of its growth and expansion.

It is no exaggeration to say that the accomplishments of Grand River Printing & Imaging in just three short decades are remarkable. The company has assembled a unique team of talented and committed graphic arts business professionals and built a significant presence in the local, regional and national printing markets. On the occasion of our 30th year in business, we wish to thank our clients for their support and loyalty over the years, without which it would not have been possible for Grand River Printing & Imaging to have made such tremendous achievements.
